Story

Vishwak Sen directs and stars in Cult, an A-rated Telugu survival-slasher in which partygoers are trapped and forced into a deadly game until a police officer turns up to fight back. Gayatri Bharadwaj, Tarak Ponnappa and Murali Sharma co-star, with music by Ravi Basrur.

What works

  • Ravi Basrur's background score is praised across reviews (Sujan Insights, Box office muchatlu, Cinemapicha, Mana Stars)
  • Vishwak Sen's screen presence and bold direction, with a second half many find gripping (All In One Film Updates, Box office muchatlu)
  • A fresh survival-slasher concept for Telugu cinema, with twists and brutal action that gore fans enjoy (Rapchik, Sujan Insights)
  • Good cinematography and rich production values (Sujan Insights, Box office muchatlu, Cinemapicha)

What doesn't

  • Extremely violent and A-rated: not for the squeamish or children (Rapchik, Telugu Filmnagar)
  • The hero's entry deflates the slasher tension and the second half becomes a one-man show (Cinemapicha, Sumanth Sadasivuni talks)
  • Illogical scenes, weak VFX and simple, repetitive fight choreography (Sumanth Sadasivuni talks, Movies4u Official)
  • A slow, lengthy first half and a runtime some feel needed trimming to two hours (All In One Film Updates, Mana Stars)

What each reviewer said

  • Sumanth Sadasivuni talks (Telugu) — One-Time Watch, 5/10
“Calls it a Squid Game-style survival thriller with a surprising hero twist and a good background score, but dislikes Vishwak Sen's artificial wig and over-elevation, finds the violence excessive, the VFX weak and several scenes illogical, with little that is new. Bottom line: neither good nor bad; an average one-time watch.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Rapchik (Telugu) — Good Watch, 6.5/10
“Calls it a decent, experimental watch with a fresh concept, twists after a mysterious first 20 minutes and plenty of bloodshed that action and Hollywood-style fans will enjoy, though squeamish viewers may be put off. Bottom line: worth seeing in theatres if you like violent thrillers; he says he would watch it again.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Movies4u Official (Telugu) — Skip, 3/10
“Didn't like it at all: the violence has no emotional hook, a scene where SPG commandos just stand watching a psychopath got laughs for the wrong reasons, the action choreography is simple, the background score repeats and the back story is thin. Bottom line: 'violence for the sake of violence'; he would skip it.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Sujan Insights (Telugu) — Must Watch, 8.5/10
“Calls it shocking and brutal in the best way, a film he had waited years for in Telugu cinema, praising Vishwak Sen as actor and director, the bloody second-half fights, Ravi Basrur's goosebump score, the cinematography and rich production, plus an emotional core under the action. Bottom line: highly recommended for action fans this weekend.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • All In One Film Updates 2.0 (Telugu) — One-Time Watch, 5.5/10
“Finds the concept interesting, but the first half is long, messy and dead slow, the comedy fails and some performances are weak; it picks up when Vishwak Sen enters and the second half grips, with the violence well presented. Bottom line: a decent one-time watch for blood-and-gore fans; others can skip it, and keep expectations low.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Box office muchatlu (Telugu) — Good Watch, 8/10
“Calls it a gripping survival thriller that recalls Squid Game but tells its own story, with Vishwak Sen's mass, arrogant-cop turn, strong music, good cinematography and suspense held until the interval and the final reveal. It is an out-and-out A-rated action film with little comedy. Bottom line: a good action thriller, rated 4 out of 5.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Mana Stars (Telugu) — Good Watch, 7/10
“Theatre viewers call it a new-genre, theatre-worthy experience: the three friends carry a funny first half, Vishwak Sen's second-half entry works as a one-man show and Ravi Basrur's music feels like a rave. A few say the story is routine and it needed trimming to two hours. Bottom line: mostly positive audience reaction, not a critic's review.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Cinemapicha (Telugu) — Wait for OTT, 4.5/10
“Likes the first half and the crowd-handling direction, but says Vishwak Sen's entry drains the slasher tension, the villains can't touch him and the slow-motion second-half fights look good but add nothing, so it ends up a mass commercial film. Bottom line: technically polished with good music, but a decent first half followed by a letdown.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • TeluguOne (Telugu) — Must Watch, 8/10
“An audience public talk, with at least one person from the film's cast among the speakers: viewers call it a super-hit slasher with great twists, strong acting and direction from Vishwak Sen, amazing fights and good music, and say the violence is part of the story. Bottom line: enthusiastic first-day reaction, partly from the film's team; not a critic's review.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Telugu70mm (Telugu) — Good Watch, 7.5/10
“A theatre public talk: viewers praise the background music, Vishwak Sen's performance and direction, the twists and the violent action, calling it a theatre-worthy experience, with a late plot twist and a drug-awareness message. A few say it drags and would work better at two hours. Bottom line: mostly positive audience reaction, not a critic's review.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • TV9 Entertainment (Telugu) — Must Watch, 8/10
“A public talk mixing fans with a person from the film's cast: speakers call it a Diwali blockbuster, praise Vishwak Sen as actor and director, the fights and the background music, and say its drug-awareness message is a good one for young people. Bottom line: an enthusiastic reaction, partly from the film's team; not a critic's review.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Telugu Filmnagar (Telugu) — Must Watch, 8/10
“A theatre public talk where fans call it an excellent action film with a killer background score, strong fights, a good interval and fine direction by Vishwak Sen, 'a new genre for Telugu audiences', but warn it is very violent and that sensitive viewers and children should stay away. Bottom line: a thrilled first-day crowd; audience reaction, not a critic's review.” Watch the review on YouTube
