Ranabaali review: 4.7/10, One-Time Watch

Telugu · Tollywood · Released 16 Oct 2026

ReviewHub score: 4.7/10 · Verdict: One-Time Watch — based on 7 YouTube reviews (1 positive, 3 mixed, 3 negative).

Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika have chemistry to spare, but almost every reviewer says the three-hour famine epic loses the war in its second half.

Story

Set against the devastating backdrop of the Great Madras Famine of 1876, Ranabaali is a massive historical action spectacle that tracks the explosive rise of an indigenous rebel against the global might of the British Empire.

What works

  • Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna's chemistry, praised by Thyview, Cinemapicha, Poolachokka and Movies4u
  • Excellent production design, costumes and cinematography recreating the 1870s famine era
  • Vijay's Rayalaseema look and committed performance; Rashmika called one of the best actresses working today
  • A strong interval block, with Ajay-Atul's interval music giving Cinemapicha goosebumps

What doesn't

  • Second half drags and the near-three-hour runtime needs 20-30 minutes trimmed, say Thyview, Ravi Telugu Traveller and Cinemapicha
  • Repetitive British-torture scenes and a routine revolution story that rarely lands emotionally
  • Action and background score feel flat and lifeless, per Thyview, Movies4u and Barbell
  • British officers speaking dubbed Telugu and heavy on-screen text undercut the impact

What each reviewer said

  • Barbell Pitch Meetings (Telugu) — Skip, 3/10
“Calls the three hours a test of patience, finding Vijay's mannerisms forced while Rashmika feels natural, and says the famine-era emotion never lands because the film tries to cover too much, with a muddled climax and forgettable music. Bottom line: the reviewer personally would not recommend it to friends.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Poolachokka (Telugu) — Skip, 2.5/10
“Praises the production design, cinematography and Vijay-Rashmika chemistry, and admits a few scenes brought tears, but finds the rest predictable and so slow that 40 minutes felt like 90, with Telugu-speaking British officers and on-screen text killing the impact. Bottom line: rated 1.13 out of the reviewer's own 4.51-tomato scale.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Thyview (Telugu) — One-Time Watch, 5/10
“Enjoyed the first half and calls the Vijay-Rashmika scenes magical, with excellent production design, but the second half piles on ideas that never land, the action and sound feel lifeless and the film runs 30 minutes too long. Bottom line: a story with huge potential, bogged down by uneven execution.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Ravi Telugu Traveller (Telugu) — One-Time Watch, 5/10
“Watching in the US, the reviewer loved the Rayalaseema village setting, Vijay's effort and the interval bang, and would have given 3.5 out of 5 at the break, but a dull BGM and a dragging, overlong second half wore him down. Bottom line: a reluctant 2.5 out of 5, while urging viewers to see the patriotic story.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Movies4u Official (Telugu) — Wait for OTT, 4/10
“Credits the Vijay-Rashmika love track, one good song and a slightly better climax, but says it retells a routine revolution story through repeated British torture scenes, uses a pregnant woman for emotion and plans highs on paper that never pay off on screen. Bottom line: a disappointing, below-par film despite good intentions.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Cinemapicha (Telugu) — One-Time Watch, 5.5/10
“Says Rahul establishes Ranabaali's character superbly, Vijay is phenomenal and Ajay-Atul's interval music gives goosebumps, but the second half is a letdown, the villain is wasted and the climax feels confused. Bottom line: a great first half and a disappointing second; go with low expectations and VD fans, 'the wait is still on'.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Review Talks (Telugu) — Must Watch, 8/10
“An audience public talk filmed outside Prasad IMAX on day one: fans call Vijay's Rayalaseema look and Bobbili Ranabaali character 'another level', describe a heavy, emotional film and predict it will be the Dasara winner. Bottom line: first-day fans call it a blockbuster; this is audience reaction, not a critic's review.” Watch the review on YouTube
