ReviewHub score: 8.5/10 · Verdict: Must Watch — based on 11 YouTube reviews (10 positive, 1 mixed, 0 negative).

Nolan makes you sit through a 25-minute opening before the Cyclops even shows up - reviewers say it's worth the wait.

Story

Christopher Nolan's next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer's foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in cinemas everywhere on July 17, 2026.

What works

  • Matt Damon and the stacked ensemble cast deliver career-best work
  • Nolan's grounded, largely practical, minimal-CGI approach pays off
  • The Cyclops and Circe sequences are genuinely terrifying highlights
  • Extraordinary 70mm/IMAX cinematography across real locations

What doesn't

  • A slow, roughly 25-minute opening stretch tests patience
  • Runs long, with pacing that drags in places, especially the first half
  • A few modern-sounding lines and some choppy action editing break immersion
  • One dissenting view calls the village-to-village structure formulaic beneath the spectacle

What each reviewer said

  • Jeremy Jahns (English) — Must Watch, 9/10
“Matt Damon and a stacked ensemble (Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson) all land, the Cyclops and Circe sequences are genuinely terrifying, and Nolan's grounded, minimal-CGI approach pays off completely. A slow ~25-minute setup gives way to a devastating final act. Bottom line: one of the best of the year.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • YOGI BOLTA HAI (English) — Good Watch, 8/10
“Nolan tells this one in a more accessible, less puzzle-box way than usual, with real Ramayana/Mahabharata echoes and a career-best Matt Damon. It runs long and tests patience. Bottom line: the reviewer's own score 4/5 — no single shocking moment, but a satisfying watch overall.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • BnfTV (English) — Must Watch, 9/10
“Nolan grounds mythic, high-concept material in real human emotion again, shooting almost entirely practical with real locations instead of CGI. Ludwig Göransson's score deliberately blends in rather than standing out this time. Bottom line: visually and emotionally excellent — see it on the biggest screen you can.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Chris Stuckmann (English) — Must Watch, 9/10
“The commitment to practical, in-camera filmmaking is staggering, and the Cyclops and Samantha Morton sequences play as full-on horror. The first 10-15 minutes are genuinely disorienting before it clicks. Bottom line: the second half and third act are among Nolan's best work.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • ComicVerse (English) — Must Watch, 9/10
“Visually the most beautiful Nolan film yet, with genuinely powerful dialogue and an emotional core that lingers for days. Some choppy action editing and a few overly modern-sounding lines are the only real complaints. Bottom line: near perfection for this reviewer.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Filmi Indian (English) — Good Watch, 8/10
“A serious art film, not mass entertainment — the monster and witch sequences and the final act's emotional payoff are genuinely stunning, but the first two hours move slowly and some starry actors feel underused. Bottom line: the reviewer's own score 4/5, but explicitly warns this will divide audiences.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Barbell Pitch Meetings (English) — Must Watch, 9/10
“Fully immersive for the entire three hours — a rare complete win for this reviewer after a disappointing year of releases. Some costume/armor choices feel oddly sci-fi, and Tom Holland's casting is a bit distracting given his Spider-Man fame. Bottom line: 'they killed it.'” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Shan Prasher (English) — Must Watch, 9/10
“The 70mm IMAX-only cinematography across six countries is extraordinary, and the screenplay's handling of hospitality, cunning, and homecoming themes is impeccable. First half is long and the second half drags a bit. Bottom line: ranks above Oppenheimer and Dunkirk for this reviewer, right beside Interstellar.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Chris Stuckmann (English) — Must Watch, 10/10
“A second viewing on 70mm revealed even more — the bow-stringing mirror at beginning and end, the choice to deny the audience the Sirens' actual song, and Samantha Morton's Circe sequence are all masterfully constructed. Bottom line: an A+, now ranks among this reviewer's favorite Nolan films.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • PJ Explained (English) — Must Watch, 8/10
“Matt Damon's Sirens-scene performance and Anne Hathaway's understated work are genuine standouts in a properly epic IMAX spectacle. The first half feels talky, and some modern dialogue breaks the immersion. Bottom line: a cultural-landmark film despite the rough edges.” Watch the review on YouTube
  • Tamil Talkies (English) — One-Time Watch, 5/10
“The dissenting voice here — mocks the episodic, village-to-village structure as formulaic and questions whether the IMAX/70mm hype is masking a thin story. Bottom line: skeptical that the visual spectacle everyone's praising adds up to a genuinely good film.” Watch the review on YouTube
