A gangster so feared the whole village flinches gets trapped in a school bathroom by an eight-year-old - and comes out having learned more about fatherhood than fear ever taught him.
Story
Set in 1986 Madras, a feared local don is accidentally locked inside a deserted school restroom by an eight-year-old boy. As the two form an unlikely friendship, the gangster is forced to confront his vulnerability and find his way back to his family.
What works
- The 8-year-old child actor is near-universally singled out as a revelation - Tamil Talkies, tamilcinemareview, Barbell Pitch Meetings and Thamizh Padam all call his performance a match for (or better than) Vijay Sethupathi's, with tamilcinemareview predicting a National Award
- Vijay Sethupathi delivers what multiple reviewers call career-best work, anchored by an unbroken, several-minutes-long emotional confession shot that left audiences in tears across at least four separate reviews
- Sai Abhyankkar's music and background score draw outsized praise - tamilcinemareview and Poolachokka both say it elevates every scene without announcing itself, with several reviewers predicting award recognition
- A genuinely novel, small-scale premise executed with real period detail - the 1986 Madras setting, production design, and connective writing (the door-maker, the toy, the snake) are repeatedly called out as more thoughtful than typical commercial fare
What doesn't
- Pacing is the one consistent complaint - Poolachokka, Filmi craft and multiple street-interview voices on PuthiyathalaimuraiTV independently flag a slow build and lengthy runtime, with Poolachokka specifically saying the don's reason for ending up at the school 'isn't very convincing'
- A tonal shift in the second half reads as jarring to at least one reviewer - one voice in Bingoo Box's street-reaction roundup felt the back half turned unexpectedly 'western' and didn't fully stick compared to the grounded first half
- The deliberately slow, dialogue-light style (several reviewers compare it to Malayalam arthouse pacing) won't land for viewers expecting a conventional commercial gangster film, something Filmi craft explicitly warns 'may sound a bit boring' to some
- Minor world-building inconsistencies in family-travel scenes feel slightly mismatched to the period setting, per Filmi craft
What each reviewer said
- Empty Hand (Tamil) — Must Watch, 9/10
“An exhaustive scene-by-scene breakdown that struggles to find anything negative to say, crediting a tightly connected screenplay where every character and callback (the door-maker, a toy, a snake) pays off, standout work from Sai Abhyankkar's music, and the 8-year-old co-star as the real hero of the film. Bottom line: 'A feel-good movie' with 'no big drawback' - don't miss it.” Watch the review on YouTube - tamilcinemareview (Tamil) — Must Watch, 9/10
“An award-season-tipping rave predicting the child actor wins a National Award and the film collects 4-5 awards overall, singling out Balaji Tharaneetharan's patient, dialogue-light direction, Sai Abhyankkar's restrained background score, and incandescent-lit period cinematography. Bottom line: '100 out of 100' - 'this Baththa will definitely touch your heart.'” Watch the review on YouTube - Barbell Pitch Meetings (English) — Must Watch, 9/10
“A comedic pitch-meeting-style take from an NRI reviewer who watched it blind (no trailer) in a US theatre and walked out stunned it wasn't a typical body-count commercial film, comparing the child actor favourably to Super Deluxe and watching the film three times since. Bottom line: 'The best movie I've seen in 2026' - 'go blindly and come back and say thanks.'” Watch the review on YouTube - Tamil Talkies (Tamil) — Good Watch, 7.5/10
“A thoughtful essay-style review crediting disciplined, economical writing where no character feels wasted, but drawing a direct comparison to the 2013 Malayalam film 'Shutter' to argue the don's bathroom confinement lacks the tension that premise should generate. Bottom line: A slow but never boring first half gives way to a genuinely emotional back half - a good feel-good family watch.” Watch the review on YouTube - Tubelight Mind (Tamil) — Must Watch, 8.5/10
“A real-time, in-theatre reaction that admits going in skeptical before being won over within 20 minutes, praising writing that 'feels like a Malayalam film' and a child actor whose crying scenes genuinely moved the reviewer to tears. Bottom line: 'A must watch' - 'everyone, please watch this movie, you will definitely enjoy it.'” Watch the review on YouTube - Bingoo Box (Tamil) — Must Watch, 8/10
“A street-reaction roundup with an overwhelmingly tearful, positive consensus and real numeric scores (4-4.5 out of 5) from multiple moviegoers, though one voice flags the second half feeling unexpectedly 'western' in tone and not fully landing. Bottom line: A crowd-pleasing family watch - 'he made us cry, it's a different level of sentiment.'” Watch the review on YouTube - Poolachokka (Tamil) — Must Watch, 8/10
“A candid personal take rating it '4.01 Tomatoes' and calling it a career-best Vijay Sethupathi performance he 'could retire after,' while being upfront that the pacing is slow, the film runs long, and the don's reason for ending up locked in the school 'is not that convincing.' Bottom line: 'For me, this is the film of the year' - stretched premise and all.” Watch the review on YouTube - Filmi craft (Tamil) — Good Watch, 7.5/10
“A production-focused review praising the 1986 Madras period detail (the TV antenna, the market, the bathroom set) and Sai Abhyankkar's score, while warning the deliberately slow, Malayalam-style pacing 'may sound a bit boring' to viewers expecting a conventional gangster film, and flagging minor family-travel details that don't quite match the period. Bottom line: 'One of the best movies of this year' - go in knowing the pace is patient, not punchy.” Watch the review on YouTube - PuthiyathalaimuraiTV (Tamil) — Must Watch, 8/10
“A street-interview roundup where multiple moviegoers independently give real numeric scores of 4 and 4.5 out of 5, consistently citing 'a small lag' in pacing as the only real knock against an otherwise superb, emotional family film. Bottom line: Broad, genuine audience approval - 'if there was no expectation, it would have been a good movie - you would feel good.'” Watch the review on YouTube - Thamizh Padam (Tamil) — Good Watch, 7.5/10
“A brisk quick-take praising the unexpected chemistry between Vijay Sethupathi and the child actor, plus a standout, genre-appropriate score from Sai Abhyankkar. Bottom line: 'A celebration movie' worth a weekend watch with friends and family.” Watch the review on YouTube
